I am so excited to work with you! This is a process of making art together. I hope this guide helps you get ready for our day together. Photography is more than just a click of the shutter. A lot of the magic comes from going on an adventure and having a great day together. I want your session to feel fun and relaxed. My goal is that it feels like a really special together day together. Read on to find out how we make that happen!
I know its nerve racking. Its hard to get your picture taken. Its even harder if you have children as we never know how they are going to react to a new situation. Try to think of our session as just that. Something new. Kids can feel when you want them to perform. At first we are just going to play and get comfortable. Whether its a couple session or a whole family I will help guide us into having fun and connecting. Just be curious and open and all will work out beautifully.
I will send a long some Pinterest boards I’ve made to help you plan for our session. I want you to fee like yourselves on your best day. Adding some special jewelry or that hat you traveled the world in can add special meaning to the images. Above all you should be comfortable. If its the kind of outfit that makes you feel you need to suck in or just makes you move awkwardly leave it at home. You should be able to hop, twirl and skip in whatever you wear.
If you plan to get haircuts make sure you do so at least a week before the shoot. Its best not to have too fresh of a cut. I think its wonderful to set up a salon date for yourself. A blowout, curls or braids can really make you feel good. I embrace the wind in my shoots so keep that in mind!
Kids can smell your quest for their cooperation a mile away. Its best to get them excited about an adventure with a new friend in a new place. No need for bribery.
If we are meeting at Sunset, go out to lunch, take a long stroll together, or spend the day relaxing at home together. Do something that keeps your mood high and connection strong. Its not the day to run errands or check things off on your long to do list. Think of our session like a date. Take time to pamper yourself. Take a bath and put on your favorite tunes while you get ready.
This could be a surprise kiss, your child bringing you a rock they found, or a gust of wind that blows your hair over your face. If your babe decides to roll in the sand, throw rocks in the sea, or walk along a downed tree, go with it! I love the wind, rain, and fog. I mean I really love it! We definitely don't need a perfectly sunny day for our session to be a success.
Animals are a part of the family and they are a part of your story. I’d love to have them on our shoot. They can also help keep everyone relaxed and having fun. Aren’t they great that way?!
We will work together to decide on the perfect location for our shoot. I do have my favorite secret spots I love to take my families but I also like to explore new places. I want you to feel relaxed so being somewhere private is a priority for me. Plan for 1-2 hours for family shoots. Newborn sessions can be a bit longer, allowing ample time for babies (and parents) to feed. We will become fast friends, going on real adventure together. I will prompt you guys, but it’s about real fun and connection.
Two weeks before
If you are in San Francisco we will meet for an in person consultation. If we are separated a by bridges and Bay Area traffic we will g-chat or Skype. I will make sure to find out as much as I can about you to plan our session together. I want to know all the little details that are most important to you.
The day of our session
Please make sure to be on time and ready to go. Pack lightly so you can be hands free. I will take all your extra belongings in my bag (ie. diaper changes, snacks, an extra sweater). I want you to be free to explore right from the beginning.
2-3 weeks after
You will receive a link to your online gallery where you can download all your images to print, share and save forever. All the images are included but if you’d like to purchase images with my lab you can order them right from the gallery. You can also send the link to your family for easy sharing. Newborn sessions and births will receive a sneak peak within 48 hours of our shoot for making announcements. All other sessions will receive their images within 3 weeks.
For the in home portion of our shoot I bring a variety of things for you to try. The images below are part of my collection and I am always adding new things!
When we head outside I want you to wear the dress you feel most comfortable in. I love movement over a form fitting dress but it’s totally up to you. Add some jewelry to add some special meaning to the images.
My style for newborn portraits is very minimal. I want your baby to be the highlight. I have a variety of organic swaddles and hats that I bring. I also often photograph baby on black. Below are some examples of the things I will bring with me. I will also encourage you to bring out any heirlooms or special pieces you’d like to incorporate.
For images with the whole family keep it simple. You have a newborn on your hands and we want the pictures to feel real. That being said doing a little extra to make you feel like the best version of yourself goes a long way. I usually spend some time going through my client’s closets when I arrive to help you pick something out for the day. Focus on your hair and skin and we will talk clothes when I arrive.
With families it’s easiest to start with the hardest person to dress, then go from there. Stick to three or four complimentary colors. One approach is to have parents in neutral colors while kids where a pop of color. This allows them to really shine.
Layering is always great and adds personality.
Avoid really fancy clothes and things that will distract from your child.
Remember that shoes are optional! As always I love clothes with movement and added jewelry for meaning.
